We have been located at 292 Bates Street for five years in the same building as the Police Community Resource Office and the B Street Health Clinic. We have close relationship with both of these important organizations. Our main goal all these years is to work with all immigrants in Lewiston/ Auburn as well as the local population. Even before we organized into a nonprofit organization, we saw that there were more than ten emerging ethnic based community organizations and every single one of them was only for their own ethnic identity. We did not believe in that way of organizing or thinking or behaving. We decided the start an organization that was multicultural, multiethnic, and multi-integrational. We did not see the white people as the enemy or the fixer; we saw all communities working together to make the City a better place for everyone. Even the Somali community was divided among themselves. The Somalis from the large clans were divided in all sub-clan based. The Somali Bantu were separated and still discriminated against by the sub-clans just like back home. We were very distressed by this situation. The white boys refused to let the Somali boys on the soccer field; the Somali boys discriminated against the Bantu boys. It was getting worse and worse. So, we decided to start a Multicultural organization that served the needs of ALL residents.
Our project is based on that philosophy: From all of us by all of us and for all of us regardless of status or country of origin.
